CALCITONIN belongs to groups of medications called hypocalcemic agents, primarily used to treat high blood calcium levels (hypercalcemia). It helps your bones stay as strong as possible. It can help if you have or are at risk of getting a health problem called osteoporosis. This is where your bones get weaker and more likely to break. Osteoporosis can happen for many reasons, but you're more likely to get it if you're a woman who has been through menopause or if you take steroids, for a long time. Some types of cancer treatment can also increase your risk of getting osteoporosis. Besides this CALCITONIN can also help people who have Paget's disease of bone. This weakens your bones and can bend them out of shape.

Directions for Use

Before using CALCITONIN, your doctor might give you an allergy skin test to see if you are allergic to CALCITONIN. Your doctor may also check your nose before and during treatment with CALCITONIN. It is important that your doctor check your progress regularly to make sure that CALCITONIN is working properly. Blood and urine tests may be needed to check for unwanted effects. CALCITONIN can lower the calcium levels in the blood (hypocalcemia). If you have abdominal or stomach cramps, confusion, convulsions, difficulty breathing, mood or mental changes, muscle cramps in hands, arms, feet, legs or face, or numbness and tingling around the mouth, fingertips, or feet, inform your doctor immediately. Pregnant ladies should first consult with their doctor before taking CALCITONIN as it is not known whether CALCITONIN will harm an unborn baby. Breastfeeding women should first consult with the doctor before taking CALCITONIN as it may pass into breast milk and affect the infant. CALCITONIN should not be given to children as safety and efficacy have not been established. Do not take CALCITONIN for longer durations unless prescribed by your doctor. If your condition does not improve even after taking the CALCITONIN full course, please consult your doctor.  CALCITONIN may increase the risk of having cancer while taking longer durations.
